Relativity Cristin Bishara Books
RELATIVITY is a smart, thought-provoking and incredibly captivating novel that explores the concept of alternate realities and invites readers to contemplate the idea that one small change in a distant past can result in a radically different present, the notion that some things are meant to be, and the possibility that no matter how many different realities may exist, a perfect alternate may not.Ruby Wright's life hasn't turned out quite as she had hoped it would. Her mother is not much more than a distant memory. Her father seems to care more about his deadlines than her. And she had to leave behind her home and her best friend George to move halfway across the country to live with her father's new wife Willow and her daughter Kandy, who is anything but sweet.
So when a portal opens, giving her access to nine alternate versions of her reality, she is anxious to explore each of them in order to find one more perfect than her own. One where her mother is still alive. One where her father is more involved in her life. One where she can finally know what being happy really means.
But finding a better reality, one that has everything she wants, might not be possible. And even if she does find one, she'd have to give up everything from her reality - her past, her friend, the possibilities of that future - permanently displace a version of herself and slip into her new life knowing she took it away from someone else. Though, for her, the chance at a perfect life might be worth the cost.
She just needs to find it before the portal closes. Before time runs out and she's left wondering whether one of her unexplored realities is even better. Before choosing a reality is no longer an option. Before she finds herself trapped in a reality far worse than the one she hopes to leave behind.
Author Cristin Bishara takes readers on a journey with her character, Ruby Wright, who is looking for a life that isn't missing quite as many pieces as her own. She lets Ruby see what could have been and what might be, and gives her the chance to pick her future. She created a character who is intelligent and curious and incredibly determined but who is also vulnerable and in need of affection, which makes her both likable and relatable and a character worth rooting for.
RELATIVITY touches upon the science behind traveling between realities and presents it in a way that is interesting and easy to understand. It offers up food for thought about what might have happened to make one reality so drastically different from another, what would happen if Ruby chose to abandon her own reality, and why certain events seem destined to reoccur - it's a story that allows readers to use their imaginations to explore all the possibilities.
At under 300 pages, RELATIVITY is a quick and engaging read, but one that will continue to make readers think long after they've turned the final page. With scientific concepts that are fascinating, a journey filled with excitement, anticipation and more than a little trepidation, a character whose plight is heartfelt and a story that asks the question "what if?" this book is a must.

Relativity Cristin Bishara Books Reviews
this book took a while to get started. I had to talk myself into continuing to read it because of the "crazy" premise. But, because the women in my book club frown on not reading the choice of the month...I read it. Usually, we discuss the book for maybe a half hour, but this discussion surprised me. I think the relationship(s) that Ruby has with each of the characters in each of the universes merit a discussion point of it's own. We(the book club members) related to the characters on many levels. We related as mothers first, then as outsiders looking in and then in my own case, as wondering what would have happened in my own life if I had not traveled down the road I had chosen. While the premise is intriguing, the science bogs down the reader and there are many "strings" left hanging.
A unique, fast moving story with a sci-fi twist. It captures the journey of a teenager trying to find reconcilliation with her new family situation. It is certainly a story anyone can relate to trying to find one's place in the universe. The main character, Ruby, is a deftly drawn "science geek," but thoroughly likeable and attractive - just ask her boyfriend! I hope to see more like Ruby, smart, and ultimately capable of growing into life's demands for change. Read the book to find out how the vehicle of the amazing "Tree" makes Ruby's quest for the perfect life possible (or impossible).
Considering the concept of parallel universes is still science fiction for most people, this was a rather interesting tale of possibilities. If you've never read anything on the subject, you might find it a bit confusing with it's scientific references to atoms and quarks, etc. For me, it was a fast, light read that allowed me to suspend proven beliefs. This book would probably be better suited to young adults - if they have been paying attention in science class and have an open mind.
Okay, I think it's a teen genre book, so no surprise that an adult read it in one day, but the point is I WANTED to read it in one day. I started reading the exerpt on and was hooked by the end. That doesn't usually happen to me.
The idea of visiting different dimensions to see how life could have turned out was an interesting plot ploy, but the heart of the story is how Ruby comes to terms with her life as it is in her own universe and learns to appreciate what she has.
It was very well done, especially considering it's the author's first book. I will be watching for more from her.
The science nerd protagonist discovers a portal to other realities--her realities. Her exploration leads to the confrontation of personal issues.
The above explanation, while accurate, does not do justice to the writing of the book. Most of the book is engrossing, but then the author seems to realize how many pages she has written on the first few alternate worlds, and the rush to the ending is not as satisfying as I would have hoped it would be. That is why I did not give the book five stars.
Teenage girl, unhappy with her new life in Ohio with her inattentive dad and mean stepfamily, discovers a portal to parallel universes and goes on a search for the most perfect version of her life.
This was cute and fun, but I think it would be more enjoyable for middle grade readers who might not question the logical inconsistencies and will benefit from educational tidbits on science and string theory unsubtly shoehorned into the narrative.
Considering the main character just moved to the town where the portal is located in her normal universe, it seems more than a little coincidental, even improbable, that most of the universes she visits have not only the different permutations of her family living in that town (and mostly having lived there for a much longer time than in universe-prime), but also her crush from her old home state is often inexplicably a permanent resident of this new city.
