So, usually when I should be writing my own book I am busy reading instead. It's a cop out, what can I say? If you feel the need to read a book about writing rather than doing some writing of your own, may I introduce you to "Live to Write Another Day, A Survival Guide for Screenwriters and Creative Storytellers." This book is about the author's own practices while writing and is funny, conversational and easy to read and overall just a lot of fun.The author covers the most common pitfalls for writers, such as procrastination, not gaining feedback from others and a variety of other topics that are all things I, personally have been through during my writing career. I appreciated that this was written from the point of view of an author that has much experience in his chosen field. There were a couple of times when I felt that he got a little carried away with comparisons between his other career and writing, but it also made it easy to see a direct correlation between the world of writing, marketing, publishing and how other jobs in the world mirror the art of writing.
This is written in more of a memoir style, with a nice flow. At the end of every chapter he includes things to remember in a checklist style and there is a recap at the end of the book as well. One thing I definitely took note of during reading this book, is that this guy likes his lists. He encourages the reader to make a list for this and a list for that. Wonderful for those individuals that are more organized than I happen to be. If I make a list I lose the list.
The section of this book that I found the most helpful, was the one entitled "The Write Environment" where the author discusses the importance of having your own writing space and how to get your flow of creativity back when the environment you are in does not allow you distraction free writing time. Yes parents, I am talking to you.Although I'm not sure it is practical for everyone to have their own office space, he does have some good ideas for how to gain writing time for yourself with fewer distractions.
I would recommend this book to authors, if you need to crack a good smile now and then and read the words of another author who understands your position, this is a good place to go. It was fun and useful.

Live To Write Another Day A Survival Guide for Screenwriters and Creative Storytellers edition by Dean Orion Mark Page Jodi Lester SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
As the writer of my first story this book was amazing! Easy to read and understand.
It really helped me from start to finish!
Easy to read and not preachy. I found that I use many of the same techniques that Dean does to keep my productivity up without knowing it. If you struggle to remain productive, give this a read.
Dean Orion's book was a terrific read with lots of helpful information for aspiring writers. I for one am using many of the tips that Dean introduced to assist me in the writing of my first novel. This an excellent book, an easy and enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
A smooth, rolling narrative full of helpful ideas to think about as you climb the mountains that all writers must climb. Dean Orion's book feels like an extended conversation with a fellow artist who keeps compelling you to say, "Hey, that's another great idea, thanks!"
I've been in some of the same trenches as Mr. Orion and can attest that he NAILS IT with this book. As much a self-help checklist and pep talk as it is a reality check about writing for the entertainment industry. If you've ever doubted your writing process... or feel like you need some new routines to shake up your exercise regimen, get this book. You will refer back to it often. Of all the How-To guides I have (and will) read, I have a feeling this one will remain in my Top 5.
More importantly, it gives validation to those who are compelled to write. For us, it isn't a choice, it is a necessity.
I appreciated the easy-to-read, conversational tone of this book. Mr. Orion immediately dispels the myth of writer's block and encourages the process of procrastination, all while inviting the writer into his creative process. The chapters on note-giving and note-taking (constructive criticism) are invaluable! The most important piece of advice he gives? Once my story has been written, it is time to let it go. I think the explanation he gives about this is probably the most important any writer can read. The entire book felt like someone who gets me, and of course he does, because like him, I have the writer's gene, so essentially, it is like we are family. Wonderfully sage and encouraging but realistic advice. I highly recommend this book for writers in any stage of their journey.
`Live to Write Another Day' is part craft / part auto-biographical in some aspects. Drawn from Orion's many years writing for the film and television industry, and interestingly, for interactive games and edutainment such as Disney's parks, the book provides some simple responses to process.
Orion's chapters on process are brief, and summarised with a bullet list - these lists are amalgamated into a final chapter for reference. Written with a fair bit of humour, the brief chapters make for a quick read. As a slow reader, I managed to get through the book in only a few hours.
Crafting-wise, I found an epiphany for my own work in a brief chapter where Orion discussed the differences between villains and villainy. I was able to go back to an area that was blocking my own revision work, and look at it from a very different perspective. It requires a large rewrite and revision planning pass, but the story will be much better for it.
Orion's tips on giving and receiving notes (feedback) on our drafts was another winner for me. He broaches giving feedback in a positive way. As somebody not particularly experienced in giving or receiving feedback, I walked away with a new understanding of how I could manage and enjoy the process in both directions.
For these reasons, although I wouldn't recommend the book to new writers looking for much more crafting help, I will be giving Live to Write Another Day five stars, and recommend it for writers looking for advice and stories from a pro-writer.
